The article was more about thing to AVOID when creating a website. Since these are 'negative', I chose not to show examples to avoid from publicly displaying a person's site. The 10 examples I described are relatively common so you have probably seen these practices before. If you are looking for something more specific, please feel free to contact me directly using my contact form and I will try and help you. Thanks for your comment!

I was wondering if you had examples for some websites that use the above principles, i.e., simplicity of navigation, content, etc.

Thanks,

Pretty much the way it is. Any client who wants to argue the price isn't a client worth having. If they are willing to sacrifice quality for price it is best to let them go.

Very true, I recognize them well.

It's interesting that so many of these things come up as often from an employer as from a client. Web and graphic design is bizarre in that despite the specialist skills required, those skills are so rarely trusted.

Web design is where you can get paid for someone to tell you you're doing it wrong.

Love the article. All too often people take creatives for granted, not fully understanding that for quality work, for designs that are both functional and look good, these things take time.

As a society, we've literally been brainwashed into thinking that cheaper, faster and better do not go hand in hand, that these things are average, and average gets us nowhere.

If everyone took a look around and really thought about what cheaper, faster and more has done to the economy, they would stop doing it. Sadly, just a few of us understand this concept.

Truer words have never been spoken. Even with agreements in place and understandings things can, and usually do, go sideways. I try to avoid working with friends and family. I'm past the point of needing to 'pad' my portfolio or bank account. In fact, my bank account usually takes a hit. It's often easier to fire a client that's a time sucker than it is someone in the 'warm zone' as you put it. If you do work with them, proceed with caution!

A variation on this is blogs that are so "socially networked" that the pages takes forever to load. You know, there are pings and trackbacks and counters and all that. I avoid one particular photography blog because of that. Too much page stalling!

I never work with friends or family anymore. If someone asks, I always tell them I don't have the time, even if I do. When money is involved, friends and family tend to be the worst clients imaginable.

Yeah. There are some sites that I've gone as far as completely avoiding because of it. I get that revenue is something sites need to generate, but I'm of the thinking that I would rather have a simple $5/month subscription offering me extended features than have to deal with ads.

I have actually used AdBlock. The problem is that you can't rely on everyone using Firefox or Chrome, or that they even know of the plugin at all. Also, AdBlock doesn't deal with the overall aesthetics of the site - won't change the layout of the site. In the past, AdBlock has given me problems and caused Firefox to slow and/or crash. I finally had to remove the plugin. Also, it won't address the layout/aesthetics of the site. It IS and CAN be an option but I still maintain that some people are overselling space on their sites, more interested in generating revenue than offering valuable content. Thanks for the comment and suggestion, Dan ;)

You can get AdBlock for Firefox and Google Chrome. I've been using it for years. It does a very good job of blocking about 99.9% of the ads I would normally see. Plus, I can whitelist sites if I need to see their ads for whatever reason.

I would <em>never</em> recommend the usage of Flash in a website, for pretty much all the reasons you've outlined. It's good for video embedding in older sites, and a limited set of interactive content, but not much more these days. A lot of people simply aren't away of what can be done with more accessible technologies, or are too set in their ways to look at the alternatives.

For a while Flash was the only reliable way to create a lot of sites. Much as with tables for layout, things have changed, for the better. But not everyone lets go of the methods they've learned. Eventually they'll either <em>have</em> to update their skill set or become outdated.

Thanks for the great comments, David! I agree with you.. there are some new things that are allowing Flash to be a little easier for Flash to be used on websites. However, there are still MILLIONS of people with incompatible mobile devices. Until all the mobile devices are compatible, a website risks losing potential customers. I guess my overall feeling is that until all devices and browsers are fully compatible, and all search engines are able to "scrub" flash files in order to index the content, I just can't responsibly recommend Flash content. I still think that most of what people want done in Flash can be done in other (java) methods. Ultimately, the loading time/speed of a website, SEO & compatibility are going to be my top priorities when designing/coding sites for clients. I think we're on the same page, though. It seems that unless you're offering actual "animation" content, there's no need anymore to even USE Flash, with all the available alternatives. Thanks again for the great comments! :)
